Blog Tour: Losing It by Emma Rathbone

I would like to thank the publishers for an arc copy of this book in return for an honest review as part of the Losing It blog tour.

Julia is a funny intelligent 26 year old that any man would be lucky to have.  But Julia has a problem, without meaning to, she has made it through college and into her adult life without losing her virginity.  After all, people have sex all the time and Julia should be no different, so she sets off on an adventure to visit her aunt Vivienne in North Carolina and to try to lose her virginity in the process, but she soon finds that at 58, Vivienne is a virgin too.  Julia soon tries to discover how her aunt got to her age without once having sex and in the process, Julia tries to avoid having the same fate as her aunt.  

This book didn't grip me like I thought it would.  After reading the blurb, I was so excited to start this book, as I thought that it would be the light, easy read that needed, but I ended up feeling a bit deflated while reading it.  I absolutely did not want to give up on this book and so I stayed with it until the end and I still don't know if I liked it or not.  While the book is full of laughs, I found some of the material cringe worthy and unbelievable.  I also felt no emotion towards Julia, where as I would usually either love or hate the main character, I found myself feeling indifferent to her throughout.   Julia's character was very well written and I can't pinpoint exactly what it was about her that left me cold, I felt that there was just something missing when it came to her character.  

The book had me laughing out loud at times and the next minute the story would fall flat.  There was a lot of dialogue in this book, which made me feel distant from the story and the characters.  The character that I gelled to the most was Aunt Viv and I would have loved to have seen more of her and learned more of her story, rather than the main focus being in Julia.  I felt that the relationship between Julia and Viv was strained and quite awkward to read at times.  I would have loved it if the relationship between the two characters was more smoothly written.

The thing I loved the most about this book is the comedy element, and in my opinion this is where the authors talents lie.  She had me on the edge of seat with tears of laughter running down my face from beginning to end.  

I have no doubt that many readers are going to adore this book, but for me it lacked depth and failed to impress me.  I feel that there great promise in this story and the characters, the book just wasn't written to my particular tastes. I enjoyed all of the laughs that the book provided and I think that the author is especially talented at writing comedy scenes.  I definitely want to read more from this author and I look forward to discovering more of her work.  I can't say that I loved this book, but I didn't hate it either.  If you think the book sounds good and that it is one you're going to enjoy, pick it up and give it a go.
